Project Green Light

Making it safe to proceed with carbon capture and storage

Carbon Capture and Storage

We release a substantial amount of CO2 into the atmosphere, making it essential to store most of the captured CO2 underground if carbon capture is to significantly impact the fight against climate change. Carbon Capture, and Storage (CCS) encompasses a range of technologies designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

CCS can help accelerate decarbonization, but achieving net-zero emissions will require rapid development  and widespread adoption of such technologies, along with industry-wide collaborative efforts and innovative thinking.

Project Green Light is developing the world’s first drilling engineering software to ensure safe handling of CO2 in wells, enabling the secure and effective scaling of carbon capture and storage.

What we do

The Green Light project is developing the world’s first CCS drilling engineering software. Our objective is to enable safe drilling where a CO2 plume may infer with the well construction. This is a necessity for further upscaling and maturation of the global geological carbon storage ambitions.

Why we do it

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is identified as one of the most important actions for reaching the targets in the Paris Agreement. To play any significant part though, we will have to store most of the captured CO2 underground.

Hence there will be occurrences with drilling into CO2 while drilling near or within existing reservoir volumes containing CO2. Posing a risk for high concentration of carbon dioxide on the drill floor, during drilling.

Who we are

Green Light was inaugurated in December 2022 as an industrywide collaboration project between Equinor, BakerHughes, Wild Well Control, Transocean, Sintef, Gassnova, and Pions.

Since then others have joined, and continue to join. The fight against climate change is a global one, and relevant for all of us.

A world first

Project Green Light, as the first in the world, has demonstrated how CO2 behaves differently than methane mixed with drilling fluids, and built these findings into well control software for CCS.

wellControlCCS has an integrated model for well control operations while drilling in or into CO2 reservoirs.

Leveraging existing investments and partnerships

The comprehensive suite of drilling engineering software for CCS will be available as microservices, enabling you to leverage your existing investments and partnerships. All functionality will seamlessly fit into any existing or future system and infrastructure and integrate natively with plenty of tools. With cloud native microservices developers can easily add to legacy apps and systems with just a few lines of code, giving anyone the tools to safely optimize and decarbonize from day one.
